It’s About Abortion, Stupid!

Regardless of what the judge or abortion advocates want the Tiller trial to be about, it’s about abortion. The news generated is about abortion. The publicity is about abortion. And that’s what America is really thinking about. Not Dr. George Tiller, not his confessed killer Scott Roeder.

It’s not about murder. That’s been settled long ago. Murder is wrong, a crime and should be punished.

The part that hasn’t been settled is the morality of killing unborn babies. And even those babies that have been born, but for the inches deliberately left in the birth canal to make killing the child legal. It’s called late-term abortion, but even if you believe a fetus up to 6-months in its development is not a human being, so-called late-term abortions are based on killing live children.

Was Dr. Tiller a live human being? Of course. Was he murdered? Of course. Were his “procedures” to snuff out the lives of live babies murder? Of course. All of America just hasn’t agreed on that yet.

So the trial is about abortion, not murder.

As Monica David, writing in the New York Times said, “…in a way, the hearing here, watched intensely by all sides of the abortion debate, turned into precisely what the presiding judge had said all along that it ought not to be — a trial over abortion.”*

Of course it was. And it’s a trial that goes on every day, throughout America. Maybe not in a formal courtroom, but it does go on in the minds of women, mostly very young, who’ve had, or are about to have, their babies aborted. In the minds of the doctors who perform abortions. In fact, in the minds of a great majority of the people who declare themselves pro-choice.

As Bill Clinton said in declaring himself pro-choice, but anti-abortion, “We ought to have as few abortions as possible.” Well, if we should limit the number, it must be wrong. And if it’s wrong, it’s just as wrong for a few – or even one – as it is the millions that have been aborted since Roe v Wade.
